Fr. Alfredo G. Africa Jr., MSPh
Pastor
Fr. Alfredo Africa,Jr., MSP is member of the Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP), the Official missionary arm of the Philippine Church founded by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines in 1965. He was ordained priest in January 27, 1990 during the 25th Foundation Anniversary of the Mission Society of the Philippines. In his early years in the priesthood, he was assigned as a missionary to Papua New Guinea in 1990 to 1993 in the Diocese of Daru Kiunga, Western Province. During the MSP General Assembly in 1994 while attending as an extraordinary delegate, he was elected to the General Council and eventually appointed first as the Rector of the MSP Seminary (1994-1996) located in Tagaytay City. And after two years of serving as Rector, he was appointed Secretary General from 1996 to 1999.
Aware of his need to strengthen his spirituality and missionary priesthood, he applied for a Sabbatical Leave (1999-2000) after his term in the Council and took up a renewal program in Little Falls, Minnesota, USA. Little did he know that after his Sabbatical, he will be assigned to look after the formation of the MSP seminarians in Tayud, Consolacion, Cebu which is called "Missionary Spirituality Formation Year Program. This assignment lasted for seven years from year 2000 to 2007.
His love for the mission did not stop there as he obeyed his Superior to embark again to a new mission in the Diocese of Sacramento, USA from 2007 to 2009. However, it was just a short stint in the US Mission because on January 2009 during the General Assembly, he was elected Father Moderator of the MSP for a period of 5 years (2009-2014). He has to go home in order to head and to oversee the integral life of the MSP. After his term as Father Moderator, in 2014 General Assembly he was elected as member of the General Council and eventually appointed as the MSP Deputy Father Moderator from 20014 to 2019, Due to lack of personnel however, he was asked by his Superior to go to South Korea to work as Chaplain to the Filipino migrants. By virtue of Obedience, he went to South Korea to work as Chaplain from 2015 to 2019 while doing his duty as member of the General Council. He travels back and forth from Seoul to Manila to perform his duties and responsibilities in the Council. In 2019 General Assembly he was elected again as member of the Council and was eventually appointed MSP Bursar General of the MSP until 2024.
Now he is ready and enthusiastic to begin his pastoral ministry in this very challenging mission in St, James the Less Parish in Perris, California. He is aware this pastoral arena is entirely different from his previous assignments so he relies solely on the guidance and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit through the collaborative effort of the people of God.
So Help Me God!
The Fil--Mission
The foundation of the MSP dates back to the year 1965, during which the Catholic Church of the Philippines had celebrated its 400 years of Christianity. At that time, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (then Catholic Welfare Organization) had thought of establishing a missionary society which became a "living memorial" of the Church's gratitude to God for the gift of faith that the Philippine Church received from its early missionaries. The bishops assessed that the Philippine Catholic Church had already come of age and thus, assumed its full commitment to "share with others the faith we have so bountifully received."
This plan to establish the MSP was captured in the Statement of the Philippine Hierarchy on the Formation of the Foreign Mission Society. The following is an excerpt of the document which was signed by H.E. Archbishop JULIO R. ROSALES, DD, then President of the Catholic Welfare Organization:
"Desirous to fulfill our divine commission to preach the Gospel to every creature, we, the Catholic Hierarchy of the Philippines, herewith declare our firm determination to share the light of the Faith with our less fortunate neighbors. It is our conviction that we, as a Christian nation, have reached a mature stage in our four centuries of development and that we are prepared to assume the responsibilities of such maturity. We, therefore, proclaim officially our intention to undertake a national effort to orient our people to the missions. To achieve this and to express in the concrete our gratitude to God for the gift of our Faith, we will organize the Foreign Mission Society of the Philippines.
Simultaneous with the Fourth Centennial Celebration of our birth as a Christian nation in 1965, we will found this Society and lay the cornerstone of its seminary in Cebu. Its official patron will be the same Child Jesus whose image will be canonically crowned during the celebration. To be composed, first of all, of diocesan priests, the Foreign Mission Society of the Philippines will eventually embrace, we hope, a brotherhood, a sisterhood, and a lay missionary counterpart. The Society will accept "full members" and "associate members", these latter to be loaned and aided for a time by a diocese. Mindful of the particular needs and traits of our people, we will adopt a mode of missionary formation and a Constitution expressive of the genius of the Christian Filipino soul.
The founding of a Mission Society of the Philippines is a serious step in our history as a Christian country. It deserves the best of our generosity, our dedication, and our zeal. We appeal to our clergy and faithful to cooperate with this missionary movement of ours and, if it be the Divine will, to consider volunteering for the foreign missions."
